The Substack Dream Business
The 4 Steps to the Substack Dream Business
Substack.
10’s of thousands of newsletters.
Some with 10’s of thousands of subscribers.
Most barely scraping by.
But there is a category in the middle . . .
Where they don’t have 10s of thousands of subscribers
Growing by running ads and 10 team members . . .
But instead, people like you
You really care about the people you write for.
People connect with you and share some.
But because you aren’t making enough $$$ from your Substack
You can’t put enough effort into it
You either got a day job
Or you are hustling somewhere else
But what if you could do it right here, right now. . .
on Substack?
If you are reading this, you have likely read the formulas for “making it” on Substack:
Notes.
Viral Notes.
Paid Subscribers.
Comment, comment, comment, subscribe, subscribe, subscribe
That works.
But Oh! so time consuming and emotionally draining for a quiet empath like me :-)
Over the years, I’ve been sort of a lone wolf.
Sure, it cost me.
I didn’t build a team of 100 people
Stress out over payroll
Lose my house if I have a month of bad ads.
But what I DID learn to do was build trust with a small group of humans.
People who like me, trust me . . and buy from me.
And I don’t say “buy from me” in a selfish way.
I mean, I couldn’t DO THIS if people didn’t buy.
And I do my level best to make sure that if someone buys a $200 training program, they get $400 of real world value out of it.
Just like any other self-respecting business.
So would you like a business sort of like this?
Where you teach what you love?
If so . . .
I’ll share the steps for doing this right here on Substack:
Meat and Potatoes:
1. You must write articles that teach what they say they will, and that deliver value to your audience. (like I hope this one does.)
This is the “meat and potatoes” of your business. Without this, everything else is window dressing.
Invite People to Your Newsletter
You must invite people to your newsletter. There is no “magic” way, or one way that works better than any other.
If you have an audience somewhere else, invite them: instagram, linkedin, Facebook, etc.
If you don’t, I recommend just doing it here.
Learn “notes” (shameless plug, I have a GREAT notes course)
Actively participate in threads like this:
Hint: Claudia’s thread has over 300 comments, Philip’s thread has over 1000 comments. Assuming 1/2 of those are potential subscribers who are actively interesting in doing more than just scrolling (you have proof because they are commenting), there are 150+ and 500+ potential subscribers in those 2 threads.
What would happen if you went to every person’s comment and made a personal comment, tagging them?
here’s what would happen: a % of them will visit your profile, they will like what they see because it’s a match to their needs (your topic + their needs) and they will join your newsletter.
Note: This is a HUGE KEY to unlock on Substack!!
Rinse and Repeat:Then it’s rinse and repeat:
Write an article.
participate in a thread like those.
(If you want a list of more people like Claudia and Philip who hold threads like that, comment here and I’ll give it to you):
You gotta sell something. Like really sell something.
If you went to your dentist and he said, I’m afraid to charge you to pull your tooth, so I’m only offering free advice . . . would you find another dentist?
I would.
Your article is your free advice.
Your course is how you get paid.
And yes, by the way, I have a course on how to do this on Substack, and yes, it will teach you how to effectively DO the things I’ve written about in this article:
So without further adieu,

I finally took the leap and followed your advice, just this week. I released my first publication for this platform and, though it was scary being so vulnerable with my publication, I am happy I did!
I have shared it with my family members after not getting into contact with them for a decent amount of time and they where so thankful for me sharing it with them. Some said it was exactly the something they felt they were missing.
I love your graphics, they tell a story before you start reading.
